Life at the HERO House is as difficult or as simple as you allow it to be. Students know that how they feel about the program and their lives is directly proportional to the way they are working a program of recovery. Those who do well in school, their recovery, and their daily lives don’t even feel like they’re in a program. Those who fight and struggle and still want to “run the show” seem to feel very restricted.
Although there is a level of independence in our program, our staff helps each individual work out a daily and weekly schedule. We have community meetings and activities, but the students are responsible for their daily schedule and making sure they fulfill their obligations and responsibilities. That’s why we look for those who are leaving treatment or have had prior recovery experience, want to go back to college, but are not quite ready for independent living. Those who still need treatment are not appropriate for us. Those who might need weekly therapy and bi-monthly med checks might be. Before someone comes to our program, they go through a fairly thorough screening process.
Life at Hero House…interesting. Difficult at times but a positive experience overall. It’s good to have a community of people going through similar things as you to rely on. Though there is a good bit of freedom, the HERO House rules and programs help to make sure you are doing everything to progress in your recovery. After a decision to change your life, HERO House is a good place to reinforce that decision. Scheduled events and programs teach skills and lessons while providing time for residents to socialize and get to know one another. |

| I’m at my dream school right now, I have a great sponsor and the staff pushed me in the right direction. | ||
Even though I sometimes feel stressed under my work-load at school along with HERO House commitments, I can’t forget about all the good things they do for me. I have been to other resident treatments that were poorly organized, which makes me even more grateful for HERO House. It’s the only place where I can get help with my recovery and go to school, which is really important to me. I’m at my dream school right now, I have a great sponsor, and the staff pushes me in the right direction. If I was on my own, I probably wouldn’t budge. I am learning to be more responsible. I feel comfortable with the staff here, too. They seem trustworthy. I recently dealt with legal problems that were threatening to make me return to Knoxville, the place I was trying to escape, but a miracle happened and now I get to stay here. I think it’s meant to be. I’m doing better here than I’ve done in years. |

Life is great at the HERO House. It's a wonderful place where we learn a lot about recovery and ourselves. |

I really enjoy living at The HERO House. The people and staff are all real nice. We have lots of fun events. I enjoy doing them because it gets me out of myself. It's a great place to live. I look back at my experience and I would do it all over again. So far, life at The HERO House has been a positive experience. The first several weeks here I had difficulty getting outside of myself and getting motivated. Now, I feel more enthusiastic toward my commitments as a resident, as well as toward life in general. A large part of that transformation I owe to the staff here at The HERO House and to other residents. I have found sobriety thus far to be full of fun and hope for the future. | Its like an elevator, it has its ups and downs. | ||
Being in The HERO House has taken me out of my previous environment and is teaching me life skills which I can use for the rest of my life. I am learning how to cope with addiction and how to live a clean and productive life. I am grateful to be here and look forward to the remainder of my time here. |
