The HERO House Rules

  1. I will not possess any drugs, alcohol, or mood altering substances.
    • The Director must be notified of any prescription medications. If I have prescription drugs, they must be kept in a lock box.
    • Mouthwash or medications with alcohol are not allowed.
    • I must clear all new prescriptions and/or use of any Over-The-Counter (OTC) medications with HERO House staff prior to use. All OTC medications must be kept in a lock box.
    • I am provided with a list of approved and unapproved prescription and OTC medications in my Resident Manual.
    • Alcohol or drug use is grounds for immediate termination of the right to live at HERO House.
  2. I agree that I will not participate in another community member’s disease by keeping secrets about chemical use, rule violations, or destructive behaviors.  I further agree to notify the Director if I suspect any of the above.  I understand that failure to do so may result in serious consequences, including possible dismissal from the house.
  3. I will agree to take random drug/alcohol tests when requested by house staff.  Refusal or failure to take the test immediately, or a positive test, will result in immediate dismissal from the house.
  4. If transitioning from a treatment facility, I agree to follow all of their aftercare recommendations.
  5. The Director should be notified anytime there are concerns or questions about you, your roommates or the living environment.  We are here to support you.
  6. I agree to attend the weekly house meeting and the weekly Program.
  7. I understand I must comply with the directions of all staff, including House Managers and Directors, as requested.
  8. I agree to attend at least four 12-step meetings per week, and to comply with the documentation of such if requested.
  9. All residents in recovery from addictions must have a sponsor (within two weeks of admission) whose name and phone number should be given to their recovery coach.  Residents are expected to have regular contact with a sponsor.
  10. Residents are required to apply for part-time work within the first two weeks of residency.  If you do not find work after your first two weeks, you must begin service work. 
    • Residents must work or complete service work for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
    • Residents will not work more than 32 hours per week when not taking classes
    • Residents will not work more than 24 hours per week when taking classes
    • Residents will not work more than 3 evening shifts per week
  11. Residents are required to enroll in an accredited higher education institution at the
    first open enrollment date.  Residents must follow the Level Advancement policies for the number of courses that they elect to take. 
    • Residents must review their desired schedule with the Program Director prior to registration/enrollment in courses each semester/quarter.
    • Residents may only enroll in up to 6 credit hours in their first semester/quarter in residency.
  12. I understand that the house is a working environment and that I will be expected to assist in the daily activities required to allow the house to run smoothly. This means I will be responsible for helping with the chores, yard work, and household duties. I will be expected to do my fair share. There will be a cleaning schedule and division of labor in the community meetings.  All chores must be completed by 10:00 pm.  The Kitchen must always be clean.  Make one last check before you go to bed. 
  13. I understand that my bedroom is to be clean and my bed made every day and that failure to maintain a clean living environment may jeopardize my stay.
  14. I understand that rooms, personal property, and cars are subject to inspections at anytime by house staff.
  15. At no time am I allowed in another resident’s room for any reason. All conversations, activities, visiting, etc. is to be done in common areas. There are no exceptions.
  16. I will, at all times, respect other members of the house in regard to noise, eating, cleaning, personal space, personal possessions, and living areas.
  17. I understand I must be up and ready for the day each day, Monday – Friday by 9:55 am.
  18. I understand that the house is a smoke free environment. Smoking is only permitted more than 20 feet from any open window or doorway. Smoking material must be disposed of in an appropriate manner. Non-compliance will result in revoking of smoking privileges on HERO house property.
  19. I will, at all times be respectful of my neighbors and community at large by disposing of cigarette butt and trash appropriately, volume of music system is not to be played at an excessive level, no excessive speed in residential areas.
  20. I agree to abide by the curfew. The Director should be contacted immediately if a resident is late. A privilege of the house is a later curfew as you progress in your levels. Any changes in curfew must be discussed and approved by the Director.
  21. I agree to let someone in my community and/or Director know where I am at all times, if requested.
  22. I understand that my community, House Manager, and Director must clear overnight passes away from HERO house in community meeting before pass is valid. Resident absence form must be filled out completely and brought to house meeting at least 48 hours in advance of the absence dates.
  23. I will clear all visitors to the house with House Manager and/or Director. Visitors are not allowed in resident bedrooms at any time. Overnight guests are not permitted under any circumstance.
  24. I agree not to pursue romantic relationships while I’m a member of the recovery residence community.
  25. If a resident is in a committed relationship prior to admission to HERO House, I understand that contact or visits with the significant other must be approved by the Director.
  26. Abstinence is desired while at the HERO House and any sexual relations between HERO House residents are grounds for immediate dismissal.
  27. I understand that violence or threats of physical or emotional violence will not be tolerated and may result in immediate dismissal from the house.
  28. I will not bring weapons of any kind into the community, including stored in a vehicle.
  29. I will not go to environments such as bars, clubs, lounges, pool halls, strip clubs, hookah bars, etc.
  30. I agree not to gamble in any form.
  31. Concerts are not allowed before six months of sobriety date. After 6 months, ALL concerts must be cleared with Director.
  32. No new tattoos or piercing while a member of The HERO House community. Any major changes in outside appearance (hair color, hairstyle, etc.) must be approved by house staff.
  33. The Facilities Director must clear all computers before bringing them into the house.  Computers are subject to inspection at any time.
  34. I agree that pornographic material is not allowed in the house in any form, including on the computer.
  35. I understand that occult materials are not allowed in the house.
  36. House phone is only to be used for local and calling card calls.
  37. No sleeping on the couch.
  38. I will be fully dressed in common areas at all times.
  39. Residents are not allowed to have pets at the HERO House.
  40. No halogen lamps, candles, or incense will be brought into the house.
  41. No Energy Drinks are allowed on The HERO House properties or in your vehicles. Residents are discouraged from using energy drinks at any time.
  42. No movies with heavy violence or a drug or alcohol theme are to be watched while a resident of The HERO House.
  43. Residents of The HERO House are allowed to utilize skateboards under the following conditions:  the user must wear a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards.  If a resident violates this policy, they will not be allowed to use a skateboard the rest of their time as a resident.
  44. All laundry must be finished by 11:00pm unless approved by the House Manager.
  45. I agree not to lend money, cars, jewelry or other personal items to other house members unless processed in the community meeting.
  46. Residents are responsible for their own keys. Report lost keys to the Director. There will be a $5.00 fee for replacement keys.  Keys are also to be returned at time of discharge.  Failure to do so will result in a fee of $75.00 for re-keying locks.
  47. HERO House is not responsible for losses or theft of personal property, including: money, jewelry, clothing, etc. Stealing will result in immediate dismissal and probable legal action.
  48. HERO House can not be responsible for items remaining in the house after a resident has left for any reason. Every reasonable effort will be made to safeguard these items for a period of 48 hours, at which time they will be donated to a local charity.
  49. When I move out, I will leave a clean space for the next person, and check-out with HERO house staff.
  50. If a resident leaves The HERO House prior to completion/graduation from our program for any reason, they may not return to any of our properties for a minimum of 60 days.  After 60 days, the former resident may apply for permission to be on premises. Residents are not to have contact with a former resident for 60 days .
  51. We reserve the right to amend these rules at any time and exceptions to the rules can only be made by the Executive Director.
