Resurgence in Ecstasy Use on the Horizon?

Several indicators suggest that there may be a resurgence in ecstasy use in the coming years. There were an estimated 1.1 million new ecstasy users in 2009, according to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). This is an increase of 83% from the most recent low incidence rate of 607,000 in 2004. By comparison, there were an estimated 1.6 million new users at the height of the ecstasy epidemic a decade ago. Changes in incidence are often leading indicators of emerging patterns of substance use, and there was a statistically significant increase in the estimated number of past year ecstasy users from 2008 (2.1 million) to 2009 (2.8 million; data not shown). In addition, the number of ecstasy-related emergency department (ED) visits has nearly doubled since 2007 (from 12,748 to 22,816). CESAR will continue to monitor these and other indicators for changes in ecstasy use.

Estimated Number (in thousands) of New Ecstasy Users per Year (ages 12 or older) and Estimated Number of Ecstasy-Related ED Visits, 1992 to 2009

*Data on ecstasy-related ED visits prior to 2004 is not comparable to current DAWN ED data because of a major redesign that altered most of DAWN's core features (e.g., design of the hospital sample, drug-related cases eligible, data items submitted on these cases, protocol for case finding and quality assurance).

NOTES: Estimates from 1992 to 2001 were produced using combined data from the 2002-2004 NSDUH and are based on questions on age and month at first use, the respondent's date of birth, and the interview date. Estimates from 2002 to 2009 refer to initiation in the 12 months prior to the survey, and are produced independently based on the data from the survey conducted that year. Ecstasy-related ED visits are those in which ecstasy was involved as either a direct cause or a contributing factor to the visit.

Spring Break 2011
This past March, The Atlanta HEROes had the opportunity to participate in a "Spring Break Trip." The trip included service work, recreational activities and many learning experiences. Whether we were meditating on a mountain-top, purifying ourselves in a Sweatlodge, exploring downtown Asheville or jumping off a 40-foot pole commonly referred to as a "Pamper Pole", we were given the chance to be in the moment AND to enjoy the moment.  Enjoy some of the pictures of our experiences!

Meet With Resistance

It is the resistance of the air that enables an airplane to fly. It is the resistance of the mountain path that provides a foothold upon which to climb.

The resistance you encounter is not there to stop you. On the contrary, that resistance gives you something solid and palpable through which to move.

The faster you go, the more resistance you'll encounter. So it is by learning to allow and to effectively handle the resistance that you make great progress.

There is nothing unfair about having to put forth effort in order to make your way forward. It is that very effort that enables you to go in the direction you wish to go.

Expect to encounter resistance, and welcome it each time you do. It is a confirmation of the strength you already have, as well as an opportunity to grow even stronger.

Go ahead and plan in advance to meet with resistance, so when the meeting happens it can proceed on your own terms. It is by encountering resistance that you arrive at success.

Russian Potato Salad

An "out of the ordinary" potato salad with turkey hot dogs, pickles, scallions, hard-boiled eggs, and sweet peas. All of the ingredients are finely chopped and dressed with mayonnaise. It's got plenty of a-peel.

Ingredients

5 large potatoes

1 (16 oz.) pkg. turkey hot dogs

5 eggs

5 large dill pickles, chopped

1 bunch green onions, chopped

1 (15 oz.) can baby peas, drained

salt to taste

1 cup mayonnaise

Methods/steps

Place the potatoes in a large pot, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until a knife can be easily inserted and removed, about 20 minutes. Drain and cool slightly. During the last 10 minutes, boil the hot dogs and eggs. Drain everything, and set aside to cool.

Peel the potatoes, and cut into cubes. Chop hot dogs. Place everything in a large bowl, and mix in the pickles, onions and peas. Peel the eggs, and grate them on top of the salad. Add mayonnaise and salt to individual servings. Cool in Refridgerator.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

A.A. Thought for the Day

In A.A. alcoholics find a way to solve their personality problems. They do this by recovering three things. First, they recover their personal integrity. They pull them selves together. They get honest with them selves and with other people. They face themselves and their problems honestly, instead of running away. They take a personal inventory of themselves to see where they really stand. Then they face the facts instead of making excuses for themselves. Have I recovered my integrity?

Meditation for the Day

When trouble comes, do not say: "Why should this happen to me?" Leave yourself out of the picture. Think of other people and their troubles and you will forget about your own. Gradually get away from yourself and you will know the consolation of unselfish service to others. After a while, it will not matter so much what happens to you. It is not so important any more, except as your experience can be used to help others who are in the same kind of trouble.

A calm mind fosters clear seeing, which is another way of saying that if we practice mindfulness, we will have less self-deception. We learn to be honest, and delusions fall away. When we sit in meditation, we observe our mind, watching the thoughts pass through, all the mental traffic honking, swerving, and cutting in. We practice holding "bare attention" toward the thoughts and feelings that arise, accepting them with kindness and non-judgment.

About The HERO House

The HERO House is a recovery residence for college students in early sobriety.  We serve men and women in separate residences, based upon Peer-to-Peer Recovery Support, grounded in the 12-Step process. The HERO House is a community of students in recovery, sharing life experiences and helping each other achieve long term, quality sobriety and a manner of living that will make them outstanding contributors to our society.

Additionally, at the Higher Education Recovery Option, we work with students to return to school and to find the tools necessary to be successful while sober, on a college campus.  We tell residents at intake that our program is typically a one-year program; however, we recognize some residents will finish early and some will need additional time.  To successfully complete our program, residents need to complete a 12-Step Program, successfully complete one full-time semester of college, and to advance through all four of our levels of competency at The HERO House.
